Job Summary:

The Project Custodian operates as part of a team whose primary responsibility will be to perform projects and relief work outside of the normal custodial services for academic, administration and residential buildings.

  • Performs extensive cleaning on carpets and refinishing of hard floors mixing chemicals appropriately and using more complex cleaning equipment.
  • Performs extensive pressure washing of buildings, walls, windows, etc.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork regarding projects completed during the course of the day.
  • Dust mops, sweeps, vacuums, mops, strips, and refinishes floors. Operate equipments such as scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and carpet cleaners.
  • Cleans glass doors, windows and mirrors.
  • Dusts walls, furniture and light fixtures.
  • Cleans water fountains.
  • Sweeps stairs.
  • Empties waste containers, separating recyclable items.
  • Maintains restrooms in a sanitary condition.
  • Cleans chalkboards and chairs in classrooms.
  • Assists in relocating furniture, books, and equipment.
  • Replaces light bulbs and performs various minor building maintenance tasks.
  • Sets-up special events; i.e., set-up and clean tables, trash containers, set- up and rearrange furniture, etc.
  • Turns off lights and secure buildings.
  • Provides relief for other positions in custodial department.

Minimum 
Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write, and follow basic instructions in English.
  • Six (6) months to one year of job-related experience.

Position Competencies:

  • Extensive knowledge of cleaning chemicals.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment typically used in janitorial work and set-ups.
  • Knowledge of all carpet types and hard floor types and cleaning procedures for them.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions for mixing of chemicals and diagrams for set-up of events.
  • Ability to perform a variety of heavier tasks in the care of buildings and equipment.
  • Ability to complete written paperwork regarding projects completed.
  • Ability to adapt to different situations during the course of the day and changes to schedules.
  • Customer service skills in dealing with students, faculty, staff, the public, etc.
  • Ability to understand English and effectively communicate in the English language is preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Works on-campus at multiple work sites including indoors and outdoors.
  • Work requires physical exertion (bending, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 pounds, etc.) and standing for long periods.
  • Work may require overtime.
