Position Summary:

The Biology Department at Rollins College is seeking a Lab Manager to support and coordinate the laboratory portions of its Biology, Marine Biology and the inter-departmental Molecular/Biochemistry majors, as well as relevant lab courses in environmental studies, the Rollins Holt School and Rollins summer programs. This position also supervises an Assistant Laboratory Manager and four to six student workers through the Work-Study Program.

The Lab Manager is responsible for all operations aspects of the scientific materials management for the department (managerial, scientific, and safety).

  • Managerial includes providing support to faculty and students during laboratory teaching and research, and covers the acquisition, receiving, inventorying, and stocking of all educational and scientific materials in the Biology Department.

  • Scientific includes knowledge of the scientific techniques used in the labs and the use, preparation, servicing, calibration, and discarding of all scientific materials in the department.

  • Safety includes the development and implementation of safety measures to ensure the well-being of students, faculty, and staff when in Biology Department areas in the Bush Science Building.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coordinating and setting up for approximately 20 Biology course lab periods per week including making solutions, growing bacteria, preparing microbiological media, handling live vertebrates (in accordance to IACUC Standards) and invertebrates, handling preserved materials, gathering supplies, and moving them to and from 5 labs located on all three floors of the Bush Science Building

  • Responsible for cleaning up the lab rooms and materials after lab sessions including gathering and returning used materials, cleaning all used glassware and supplies, wiping bench tops, consolidating and properly storing all lab equipment, and processing for disposal any generated biohazards, hazardous waste, carcasses, and blood-borne pathogens

  • Responsible for all biology laboratory related areas (organizing, maintaining, inventorying, and stocking) including five teaching laboratories, three prep rooms, a general chemical stockroom, a flammable room, a flammable dispensing room, a special hazards (oxidizers) room, a poisons/health hazards storage area, a general equipment storage area, an ecology equipment storage area, and three specimen collection rooms

  • Responsible for stockroom supplies and materials (ordering, receiving, inventorying, sorting, organizing, cleaning, maintaining, and calibrating) all materials and supplies required for Biology laboratory periods

  • Growing and maintaining microbiological cultures (BSL-1 and BSL-2) and their corresponding media, as well as proper sterilization and discarding of cultures and blood borne pathogens

  • Live specimens husbandry including the care and maintenance of live specimens
    Maintaining all collections to include organizing, maintaining, and inventorying a slide collection, a preserved fish collection, a preserved invertebrate collection a fossil collection, a taxidermy collection, and miscellaneous other preserved materials

  • Training, scheduling, and supervising an Assistant Lab Manager and work-study students

  • Serving as the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for the Biology Department – associated duties include developing, organizing, and implementing a safety plan for the department in accordance with the College’s Environmental Health and Safety Office, the Risk Management Office, and in compliance with all regulatory agencies (OSHA, DEP, EPA, RCRA, DEA, among others)

  • Responsible for properly handling and processing hazardous and biohazards waste

  • Maintaining the department’s operations budget (purchasing, receiving, tracking accounts payable at a departmental level) alongside with Banner and Argos Systems and Bank of America Works Software

  • Responsible for other budget lines like endowments and faculty grants

  • Performing related duties as assigned

Work Environment:

  • Lab rooms, prep rooms, stockrooms, storage areas, collection areas, waste areas, and loading dock
  • High temperatures when working with the sterilizer
  • Very cold temperature (-80) when dealing with cryogenics, liquid nitrogen
  • Working with and transporting hazardous chemicals
  • Pushing/pulling carts loaded with equipment, lifting boxes, lifting 20 liter jugs of water or chemicals, moving gas cylinders, climbing to reach supplies in cabinets, bending to put away equipment, a lot of walking, and a lot of standing
  • Job also necessitates a lot of office work at a desk

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology or chemistry is required
  • Requires two to three years of job related experience as a laboratory manager or post-doctoral researcher
  • Lab safety and managerial experience is preferred
  • Basic chemistry knowledge necessary to make solutions and handle chemicals safely
  • Basic working knowledge of scientific equipment (microscopes, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, glass washers, pipettors, micropipettors, and other basic biology lab equipment)
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic leadership skills
  • Willingness to work as a team and follow instructions
  • Ability to accomplish tasks with minimal or no instruction
  • Ability to work with other college departments
  • Ability to negotiate with outside vendors and contractors
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Software

The Lab Manager is a full-time 12-month appointment scheduled for a total of 1950 hours annually.
