Position Summary:

The Lead Preparator is part of the curatorial team at the Cornell and works to ensure the care and proper display of the permanent collection at the museum and The Alfond Inn, as well as all temporary exhibitions. S/he project manages all installations with primary responsibility for their security, care and design, and oversees the physical spaces where the collection is stored and displayed. The Lead Preparator serves as primary liaison with the staff of The Alfond Inn and with Facilities on campus. This position reports to the Collections and Exhibitions Manager.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Plan and oversee installation of exhibitions and permanent displays at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, The Alfond Inn, and traveling exhibitions:
    • Work with the Curator and Collections & Exhibitions Manager on  planning, exhibition design, and implementation of all installations.
    • Oversee installation schedule and contract art handlers and contract labor, including supplies, packing and shipping, etc.
    • Design and fabricate, or oversee the fabrication of display cases, mounts and pedestals.
    • Organize photography of installations and objects for records and publications.
  • Oversee the physical spaces where the collection is stored and displayed: 
    • Monitor and improve design, display, and collections care of installations at The Alfond Inn and museum; actively manage the Alfond Collection through weekly condition checks.
    • Gallery maintenance, including dusting of platforms, pedestals, vitrines, and lighting, paint touch ups, and other maintenance as needed.
    • Function as liaison with Facilities and Alfond Inn staff regarding any needs for the collection and installations.
    • Work with Alfond Inn staff to establish security and care procedures for the collection as well as share information about additions to the collection etc.
    • Regular consultations with framers, conservators, and the creation of condition reports of objects in the collection.
    • Organize care for art displayed on campus; vault and Lawrence Center storage upkeep.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Collections and Exhibitions Manager or Curator.

The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College features rotating exhibitions, ongoing programs, and an extensive permanent collection that spans centuries, from examples of ancient art and artifacts to contemporary art. Open to the public year-round, its holdings include the only European Old Master paintings in the Orlando area, a sizeable American art collection, and a forward-thinking contemporary collection on view both at the Museum and The Alfond Inn at Rollins.

Located a few blocks from campus, The Alfond Inn is a visionary philanthropic boutique hotel whose proceeds help fund student scholarships. In 1981, the Museum became Florida’s first college museum to be accredited by the American Association of Museums (currently the American Alliance of Museums) and continues in 2020 as one of only four AAM-accredited museums in greater Orlando.  

Education and Experience Required:
  • Tested art handling and project managing skills.
  • Proficiency with a wide range of power tools and carpentry experience.
  • Knowledge of audio-visual technology.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work under deadline.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to serve as a liaison to other departments on campus and the Alfond Inn.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art is strongly preferred.

Work Environment:

 

  • On-campus position working in office and meeting environments, in addition to hospitality space and exhibition galleries.
  • Work requires physical labor such as lifting heavy materials.
  • Weekend days may be required.
