Job Summary:

Upward Bound Program is a pre-collegiate program based at Rollins College that provides college-preparatory programs and assisting resources to 72 college-bound high school students from Orange County Public Schools District (Jones, Evans, Wekiva, and OakRidge. Our students are motivated learners from socioeconomic backgrounds considered statistically less likely to complete a four-year degree. They range from general level to honors to Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate.

The Rollins College Upward Bound Program is seeking a high school Math, Science, and English tutor. This is a rolling position that is open throughout the academic year. Upward Bound tutors work in collaboration with UB administrative staff and teachers to provide academic support for our program participants. Candidates must have a positive, proactive approach to working with teenagers on their research papers, essays, projects, and homework during summer. Candidates should be well organized, able to manage their time, and should have reliable transportation if they live off campus.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as an academic resource to students by helping them understand, apply, and complete course content and assignments while modeling successful student activities.
  • Support the development of requisite academic skills of students and offers guidance in assisting students in reaching their academic goals.
  • Attend all tutor training and required meetings.
  • Maintain all records required to document student's attendance and academic progress.
  • Responsible for reporting tutoring work hours in Workday.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Current Major/Minor of study for college students (Sophomore-Senior Classification) and a B.A./B.S. in a related field required for college graduates.
  • Teaching experience (preferably high school – Math, Science, and English).
  • Experience working with teenagers and economically disadvantaged students in a school setting.
  • Well organized, able to manage their time, and should have reliable transportation if they live off campus.

Level 2 Background Screening Requirement

As a condition of employment, the candidate must pass a Florida Level 2 Background Screening prior to their start date. The cost of the fingerprinting is the responsibility of the candidate. The cost is approximately $70.00+ and payment is collected when the appointment is scheduled. The candidate cannot start working until all background screening results are returned and cleared or until they have received an approved exemption.

  • Employment Dates: June 16 – July 3, 2025
    • Orientation/Training: June 6, 2025, 11:00am-4:00pm

  • Work Schedule:
    • Week 1 (June 16-18, 2025)
      • Report Time 12:45pm
      • Monday through Wednesday 1:00-3:00pm
    • Week 2 & 3 (June 23- July 3, 2025)
      • Report Time 5:15pm.
      • Monday through Wednesday 5:30pm.-7:30pm

  • Tutor Location:
    • Week 1:  Cornell Science Hall, Rollins College Campus, 1000 Holt Ave Winter Park, Fl 32789
    • Week 2 & 3: Olin Library, Rollins College Campus, 1000 Holt Ave Winter Park, Fl 32789

  • Compensation: Approximately $15.00 per hour. This is an Upward Bound grant funded position through the U.S. Department of Education and is contingent upon grant funding. There are no benefits associated with this position.
